Setting Up Dynamic Qualifiers in Event Flows

Set up branching follow-up questions on Event Flow qualifiers so reps only see the questions relevant to the answer a lead gives.

Overview

Required Subscription: Event Lead Capture Plan

Dynamic Qualifiers let you turn a single-select qualifier question into a branch point.

When a rep selects an answer at capture, only the follow-up questions relevant to that answer appear next, instead of every lead seeing your full qualifier list regardless of who they are.

This keeps the capture experience shorter and more relevant for each rep.

Who this is for

Any admin setting up or editing an Event Flow's qualifiers. No special permissions are required beyond standard access to the Event Flow builder.

Before you start

You need an Event Flow with at least one single-select qualifier field. If you do not have one yet, you can create one ahead of time in Field Manager, or create it on the spot from the Data Capture step by clicking + Add Qualifier.

Setting Up a Dynamic Qualifier

There is no separate toggle to turn a qualifier "dynamic." A qualifier becomes dynamic the moment you add its first follow-up.

To add a follow-up:

  1. Open the qualifier's values in the web builder.

  2. Add a follow-up one of two ways: click Add Follow-Up directly on the value you want to branch from, or open the qualifier's ... menu, choose Add Follow-Up, then pick which value to add it to.

  3. A Search Custom Fields picker opens. Select the existing custom field you want to appear as a follow-up for that value.

  4. Once added, that value shows a small ↳ badge indicating how many follow-up questions are attached. Values with no follow-ups show no badge.

Only single-select qualifiers can have follow-ups added. If you want to use this on a field that is not single-select today, change its type first.

How Branching Works

Only one dynamic qualifier per Event Flow. Once any single-select qualifier has at least one follow-up, the Add Follow-Up action is disabled on every other single-select qualifier in that flow. It re-enables only if you remove all of that qualifier's follow-ups, or delete the qualifier entirely.

Each value gets its own path. A dynamic qualifier can have multiple values, for example "VP," "Manager," and "Individual Contributor," and each value can carry its own separate set of follow-up questions. Some values can have follow-ups while others have none. You do not have to build out every path.

Branches are one layer deep. A qualifier inside a follow-up path cannot itself be made dynamic.

Field reuse rules:

Rule

Detail

Reuse across paths

The same field can appear in more than one path, for example, "Timeline" showing up under both the "VP" path and the "Manager" path.

Reuse across levels

A field cannot be used as a top-level qualifier and inside a follow-up path at the same time. If it is already in use in one place, it is greyed out in the picker for the other.

Within a path, follow-up qualifiers work the same as regular qualifiers. You can reorder them, mark them Required, and mark them Necessary for Lead Completion. Those settings only apply if that path actually gets triggered at capture.

The Rep Experience

Before selecting a value: On mobile, a dynamic qualifier shows a small "Possible follow-ups" indicator, letting the rep know more questions may appear depending on their answer.

After selecting a value: The matching follow-up path appears inline, directly beneath the qualifier. Only that value's path shows, nothing from other paths.

If the rep changes their answer: The previous path collapses, and the new one appears in its place.

Switching between paths:

  • Answers already entered in a previous path are held while the rep stays on the create or edit screen, so switching back and forth does not lose data.

  • Only the most recently selected path's answers are saved with the lead.

  • If a rep switches paths and does not switch back, whatever was entered under the earlier path is discarded on save.

Required fields: The Required and Necessary for Lead Completion settings on follow-up qualifiers only apply to whichever path is active at the moment the lead is saved.

Offline behavior: Dynamic qualifier branching is cached on the device, so it works the same whether the rep has a connection or not, no different from how standard qualifiers behave today.

Editing and Deleting

Action

What Happens

Renaming a value

The path's label updates automatically to match the new name. No extra step needed.

Deleting a value

Its entire follow-up path is deleted along with it.

Deleting a path or qualifier already used on a lead

No data already saved on a lead is deleted. That data still shows on the lead in the web dashboard, even though the qualifier no longer exists in the Event Flow. It will no longer show on mobile, since mobile only displays qualifiers currently configured in the flow. This matches how standard qualifiers behave today.

Archiving or changing the type of the underlying field

You will see a confirmation popup warning that the qualifier and everything in its follow-up paths will be removed from any Event Flow using it. Confirm before doing this if you are not ready to lose that setup.

Duplicating an Event Flow

Carries its dynamic qualifier setup over, paths included.

Editing a lead in the dashboard that has a dynamic qualifier refreshes which follow-up fields show, based on the value currently selected.

You will see a small arrow icon next to the qualifier's value on the View Lead page indicating it is a dynamic qualifier value.

Hovering shows "Dynamic Qualifier Value." In the Edit Lead state, you will instead see "Dynamic Qualifier" in light grey next to the field name.

What to Expect

Once a follow-up is added to a value, the ↳ badge appears on that value immediately in the web builder, confirming the branch is live.

On mobile, reps see the "Possible follow-ups" indicator on that qualifier right away, with no delay or sync wait.

Troubleshooting

Issue

What to Do

"Add Follow-Up" is greyed out on a qualifier

Only one qualifier per Event Flow can be dynamic at a time. Check whether another single-select qualifier in this flow already has follow-ups, then remove them or delete that qualifier to free up the action here.

A field does not show up in the Search Custom Fields picker

That field is already in use elsewhere in a way that conflicts, either as a top-level qualifier in this flow, or inside another follow-up path. A field cannot be in both places at once.

Rep does not see any follow-up questions after selecting a value

That value may not have any follow-ups configured. Not every value needs a path. Check the value's ⮤ badge in the web builder to confirm whether follow-ups exist for it.

Qualifier data looks like it is missing on mobile, but shows in the dashboard

If a qualifier or path was deleted after a lead was captured, that data still shows on the lead in the dashboard but no longer appears on mobile, since mobile only renders qualifiers currently configured in the flow. This is expected, not a bug.

A qualifier already exists on a lead (for example, from a CSV import) before that lead enters a flow with that qualifier in a follow-up path

This scenario is still being finalized internally. Flag it to the team rather than giving the customer a firm answer for now.

FAQ

Can I nest a dynamic qualifier inside another dynamic qualifier's follow-up path? No. Branches are one layer deep. A qualifier inside a follow-up path cannot itself be made dynamic.

Can a multi-select or free text field be used as my branch point? No, only single-select fields can have follow-ups added. If the field you want to branch on is not single-select today, change its type first.
